    The Care Quality Commission estimates that there are around two million people in England and Wales for whom some everyday decisions may need to be made under the MCA**.

    Westminster Insight’s Mental Capacity Act Workshop will provide you with guidance to Ensure you are up to date with both the legal and practical implications of the MCA and DoLS and their correct applications during the pandemic.

    Learn how to implement comprehensive person-centred approaches to engage with the adults at risk of harm, their next of kin and those around them. We will examine how to evaluate the legal and emotional dimensions of best interest in each case and ensure compliance.

    Tim Spencer-Lane, Lawyer who specialises in mental capacity and mental health and social care, will explore the legal expectations and amendments and how they should be applied in front-line practice. You will get an overview of the operation of the Court of Practice - the information that must be considered for the correct implementation of the Liberty Protection Safeguards.

    Hear from Betsey Lau Robinson, Head of Safeguarding Adults and the MCA University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, on the practical application of the MCA and utilising multi-agency collaboration strategies to facilitate communication and protect adults.

    About your workshop leader: Betsey has acquired extensive experience in cardiac theatres management during her career across the NHS, HCA Healthcare International & in the Caribbean. She has been the Head of Safeguarding & the MCA at UCLH for the past 12 years. Her portfolio at UCLH for the past 17 years includes being the Trust Lead for Pre- registration Nursing & Midwifery Education. Betsey was part of the team with the Law Commission (May 2018) who presented at the Joint Committee for Human Rights at the Houses of Parliament on the proposed reforms to the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act, which received Royal Assent in May 2019. She is an original member of the National Mental Capacity Forum, (comprised of Financial Services, Utilities, Legal Services, GMC, Children services, Psychiatry, NHS England, 3rd Sector Services, Alzheimer Society, Age UK), which is led by the Department of Health & Social Care & Ministry of Justice. Betsey joins Baroness Ilora Finlay, the Chair of the Forum & the NMCF teams to promote the MCA, advice on the implementation of the LPS, by presenting at key conferences.
